For 6 months, our Labor associate, Phillipe Brunel, will perfect his English in a course at the Education First (EF) institute in Auckland, New Zealand. “My objective is to learn and deepen my professional and personal goals, for which I have always had the full support of JDF, especially the partners and my team who encouraged me in this important challenge”, he explained.

His goal is also to open himself to take legal specialization courses in order to bring more and better knowledge and experience to JDF.

Good luck Phillipe!

JDF associate wins Chile Scholarship to study in Sydney

“I chose the University of Sydney because it is one of the most outstanding law schools in the world and because Sydney is one of the cities with the best quality of life,” explained Pablo Alarcón, an associate at JDF who won Becas Chile to study an LLM in that city.

“At JDF I have focused on litigation and arbitration linked to contractual issues. In the LLM program, I am opting for those subjects linked to contracts, where I will have the opportunity to study methods of drafting contracts, ways to prevent breaches and, finally, in case of problems, solutions to these problems,” explained Pablo, who is part of the Dispute Resolution and Litigation team.

The experience acquired in JDF will allow him to complement and reinforce his new skills, considering that in Chile, in highly complex contracts, the incorporation of common law clauses is becoming more and more common. “Knowing these matters, studying their foundations and analyzing their effects, will undoubtedly contribute a lot in my return to JDF, in order to provide added value to the area of Dispute Resolution and Litigation,” stated Pablo Alarcón.

Felipe Hasenohr, an associate in the Capital Markets and Ventura Capital and FinTech team, went to Berkeley to join the University of California to pursue an LLM. “I had other options, but I finally opted for Berkeley because of the prestige of the university, which entails being able to generate new relationships and ties with highly qualified lawyers from different parts of the world,” he explained.

The program lasts one year and Felipe’s objective is to deepen his knowledge in venture capital, fintech, new technologies, as well as to improve his skills in matters related to investment funds and capital market regulation. “Having the opportunity to study outside Chile -he added- gives you the chance to meet lawyers from different jurisdictions, which, on the one hand, allows you to open new job opportunities, as well as to observe how to approach the operations that we have to live daily in our profession, but from different points of view, according to the training and experience that one has”.

Good luck Felipe!

Tax associate undergoes further training in Chicago

Our associate of the Tax area, Andrés de Iruarrizaga, traveled to Chicago to pursue an LLM at Northwestern University in that city. “Doing a master’s degree has to do with the intention of always studying and improving myself as a lawyer. I was very interested in studying abroad, in another language, improving my English, getting to know the U.S. legal system and the common law, in an increasingly globalized world and with Chilean clients who permanently maintain commercial relations with the U.S.,” he explained.

The course lasts one year and his idea is to work for another year in a law firm in Chicago or New York. “Everything I have learned in my more than 3 years at JDF is the basis to make the most of this experience. The fact of permanently advising foreign clients and lawyers has allowed me to know in advance the ways of working and legal systems of other countries, expanding my knowledge and being a kind of prelude to what is to come in this year of study,” said Andres.

To choose the university, Andres took into account several factors, among them the prestige of Northwestern, since it is within the top 10 in the United States, “and living in a city as amazing as Chicago, learning about its culture, way of life and work, even sharing with classmates from all over the world, with whom in the future I could establish working relationships,” stated Andres.

Best of luck Andres!
